Rated 5 out of 5 by Julyblue from Best of both worlds My son, who's 5, saved for this train set for months. He did tons of chores, sold a bike, traded in his Halloween candy, and cashed in his piggy banks. He is so glad to have worked so hard for it and says it was worth the wait. This set is the synthesis of his two favorite toys: LEGOs and trains. It is a really cool set. In his words: "This train is one big LEGO set!! This is one great LEGO set and I love it!!" The build is fun, the remote is easy to use and the train runs fast and smooth. We will get years of enjoyment out of this. Get the extra track and stock up on AAA batteries--the set takes 10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Semloh99 from Great play value, good design This set was purchased for my 5 year old grandson. He & I love it. His dad had the older 9v trains from the early 2000s and we found a cache of the older metal track. It was great to be able to use the old track to greatly expand the set and have it run all over the dining room. The color and details of the model are up to the usual Lego standards. I particularly like the accessories for the dining car. It would be nice to be able to purchase a set with additional cars and/or a non-powered locomotive. Longer battery life would also be useful, but all-in-all a good buy and hours of fun. I plan on re-motoring the older 9v trains from my son's collection and build a bigger railway.

Rated 1 out of 5 by BrickyChuck from Worst Lego Train Set This train set is slightly more powerful and faster than the last generation, as such the batteries run out faster but this is not a major issue as you can always replace with new batteries. Now the main problems..... Bluetooth is a pain to use, it takes a few seconds to pair and you need to pair it every time you start and hold the buttons for 5 seconds to turn off, try explain this to young children and their friends. The remote control is awkward and not user friendly, why would Lego remove the dials and replace them with buttons to control power?! I understand Lego has to redesign it without an IR receiver to cut cost but cutting cost and make a product inferior than last generation is simply unacceptable. Pity one of the best looking train is one of the worst one in terms of playability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Balazs from This is my seventh LEGO train set and I think it is a very well designed one. I like the colours of the train and all the details the designers have put into it. It was fun to build it and play with it. I do miss a second engine car though; it would be nice to buy one separately!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Builder76 from Good Buy for the money I bought this train set around Christmas time, I wanted a train going around the base of the tree. It was awesome and perfect. My daughter who played with it for the first time loved and loves it still, eight months later, yes the tree is down. I do wish there was a caboose for the train, and I hope there will be more trains, and train sets to come in the future. I know there were more train sets in the past, I hope those come back too with the very simple remote control of his set. That is the real reason why my daughter likes this set. I'm going to add the Cargo Train set to this one and really blow my daughter's mind... lol

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous01469 from Easy to build but something doesn’t look right This is very well designed and everything. but why would a train look like that? I think it should’ve been designed with another train engine. Otherwise everything is reasonable! But how do I but the headlights?

Rated 4 out of 5 by OKCM38CDN from Starter Set I purchased this set to try out the new Bluetooth Control system on an older Lego set for use at a train show (NMRA 2018 KC, MO). When the hall was almost empty the system had great range. However as the hall filled up and more and more people with cell phones and Bluetooth devices came into the show the performance decreased drastically. Was better to use the older Power Functions than Bluetooth. The set over all is a fair set for to begin with on a table or child's room. It is missing a rear engine that all speed type trains have, making the train seem in complete. Overall a starter set for a child. Is not up to the standards of the Lego trains of the early 2000's. They were more detailed and more realistic. Also the light add on (88005) listed in the instructions are no where to be found on the Lego Website when searched for.

Rated 1 out of 5 by legofan1111 from the new operating system i like this set, i just feel that the new system isn't as good as the old system. i liked it when you could just turn the train on, set it to a speed, and send it off. now, you have to be with it, because if it goes round a wall, it looses signal. also, this uses more batteries and lasts for less time. i have the old system of trains at home, and i use those trains far more often than the new on. I would prefer it if you could go back to the old system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Hisham from The Perfect Train Set! I saw some of the other reviews complaining about that the rear car, as it do not feel like a true train because it needs another carrier engine to form a closure. I am sorry to say that this is what makes it perfect for collectors. I love the fact that Lego actually listened to fans and provided us with this set, I own 8 of the previous version, then I had to go here an there to buy a additional middle cars so that the train looks a bit longer at great cost and time. In this set I do not have to, Lego did what I was hoping for, I can now retire my old trains, replace it with the new one, buy 2 sets/train and get a true long one, more realistic, and I have more control over what I pay for, I simply love it. I hope the day comes, when they do the same for the road tiles and train tracks, were they sell same types together, not forcing to buy a straight road with a T-Junction or a curved. I also hope they introduce larger roads tiles (like autobahn) and some ramps to build bridge roads, and since they are not adding runways tiles to their airports sets, I hope they introduce some for sale separate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by OldSkool from Mixed feelings I have been a big fan of LEGO trains since my first set (171) in 1974. I have every generation of train from 1966 right through to this new train which arrived today. Good points: Up to LEGO's usual standard of detail and build complexity. Nice use of colours and overall a rather good train and an excellent addition to my collection. The usual selection of Minifigs and accessories and nice details like the signal and the small 'halt' - you can't really describe it as a 'platform'. Comparable to the 7938 City Passenger Train in terms of style, build and what you get in the box. Essentially a 'revised' version of a fairly similar train. The oval of track (complete circle plus 8 straights) is the usual minimum for a 'complete' train set to get you going and, fortunately, the track is the same as the older Power Functions track so if you have other sets, you can simply expand your layouts with ease. Bad points: Very few, really. I'm slightly concerned that for what is essentially a similar train set to the 7938 in terms of concept and content is much more expensive (>50%) that its predecessor. Certainly not a 'pocket money' toy. I appreciate that it has a whole new control system (using Bluetooth and 'Powered Up!' instead of the earlier infra-red Power Functions) which means that for those who use tablets or smartphones (I don't!) then an app is available, but the incompatibility with the previous trains means means having to juggle multiple controllers in order to control your entire collection. I have invested heavily in Power Functions, over the last six years, motorising both my Maersk Train and Horizon Express as well as retro-fitting many of my earlier trains with Power Functions. Perhaps Powered Up! will have future options that enhance the functionality of the trains? I eagerly await some lights (as the original Power Functions units are not compatible) as the cab of the engine appears to have provision for retrofitting headlights. Just controlling a single train motor as it stands right now limits the possibilities somewhat. Bearing in mind I have no intention to go down the 'smart device route' and will be exclusively using the supplied remote, I find that the controller is very hard to use. The much smaller size of the unit and the small speed +/- buttons rather than the rotary wheels of the Power Functions controller might be great for smaller children, but as a middle-aged man with hands like a bunch of bananas, I find the new controller very un-ergonomic and far too small for my liking. In summary, a perfectly good train, but I have major reservations about the control system. I suspect I will 'downgrade' it to PF to keep it compatible with my existing collection and make it easier for me to operate. I am sure there are those who will embrace Bluetooth and will possibly want to go the other way and retrofit older trains with this newer system, so I will be interested to see what sort of price point LEGO will pitch a new Smart Hub and PU Train Motor. I suspect it will be more expensive to convert older trains to the new standard than it is to buy the Power Functions kit to convert this train back to infra-red. I await developments (and lights!) with interest.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Legodad12345 from Great set, poor sticker quality Just got this set for Christmas. Love 99.9% of it. Had to give it 4 stars on one really bad issue. The new stickers TLG has come out with are just not that good. Looks at my picture attached vs the actual box and older versions of this set. The new transparent stickers just don't have enough color to block out all that yellow under neigh. Have come to expect better quality from Lego and these stickers are a significant down grade from previous offering. Most disappointing as older version of this set (2018/19) had superior stickers. That said, the set looks great else wise. Good build. Kids love it. New Power Functions 2.0 works great. Already had a few crashes no issue with motor or controls. Track good. Small side builds are good. Could always use a few more figures but those are easily enough to add. Just can't fix that darn sticker problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Nellington from Smart Looking Train I bought this for myself but with the intention of my young Godsons aged 5 and 3 playing with it as well (any excuse!) and I'm really pleased with it so far. I built it up myself and it was pretty straightforward, the boys have enjoyed playing with the minifigures and sending the train round the same track as my Christmas train (which was interesting!). I know there have been some complaints from other builders about the battery usage, but I can't really comment on that as I've only been using it in short spells. I moved the position of the seats in the end carriage so the minifigures could sit in them. I think it's a really smart looking set, my friend commented that she hadn't realised it was Lego until she saw the studs on the top!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Skarnir from Good base set, great if you add more track. I bought this set for my Nephew (aged 6) as a Christmas gift. The build is pretty straight forward enough, I gave him a hand with the engine and his dad helped with the trailers. Pro's: The Bluetooth controller has variable set speeds and can be programmed for more than one train set. The over all construction is nice and solid, so won't disintegrate easily if it falls off of the track. Train carriages have nice detail and easy access roofs for play. Cons: The 6 battery power brick makes the Engine piece top heavy, making it very easy to topple over at higher speeds. Needs more track. The set could have been massively improved with the addition of a least 2 more straight piece's. for the price I would have liked a little more track. Tips: Don't forget this set requires 10 AAA batteries to operate, 4 for controller, 6 for the engine. younger builders may need help depending on build ability. A small screw driver will be require to open the battery compartments (philips or flat head will work). I would suggest buying extra track sets 60205 and switch tracks 60238, these additions will massively improve your base set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mirandata from Terrific!! I acquired it because I thought it would be a nice set to add to the lego city collection, so far I'm loving it, it has many details, and runs smoothly on the tracks, also got an extra set of tracks, works great with the app and with the remote... The only thing I couldn't find on the instructions was how to turn it off so I had to look for it online luckily it was on the website. Building it wasn't hard I'm considering on purchasing more tracks so it can go farther around or even switch tracks. I love it and my family does too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Rister from Enjoyable Introduction to Power Functions I've recently returned to the Lego hobby, and this was my first powered build. Aside from the fun of building a Lego set, actually playing with it and seeing the train run around the track was a real pleasure. Even combining extra tracks from the 60238 and 60205 sets really expands on this fun, despite needing a very sizeable space. I look forward to adding more trains, and powered sets to my collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Whaleudder from My first LEGO set in 10 years I really enjoyed building this. The instructions were very clear and it runs like a dream. If you have never seen a LEGO train in real life (like me) then you may be shocked by how big this train actually is (if you are familiar with model railway its larger than O gauge). The only thing I would like would be if the lowest speed was a little slower for slow work/shunting. Would recommend to anyone and everyone. I genuinely cant believe they can make this at such a low price!

Where the old style blocks you can make infinite shapes and experience never ends. I need to buy more rails with different styles and length but Im not sure it exists!

Rated 2 out of 5 by candicerobinandowen from off track we bought 60197 +60205 together. the position of the front wheels of the train isn't right. the wheels keeps fall out of tracks when it's truning or speed up. Dont' have any problems when it goes in a straight line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by AmmaJill from Train for grandchildren Train was purchased for my grandchildren. The battery placement was the only part my 8 yrold grandson needed assistance. He loves the train. I did buy extra track, just wish there was a few more choices for track.......like an "x" piece and that the "wiggle" pieces could be purchased separately.

Rated 4 out of 5 by FayeW from Easy build It's an easy-build train, my 3yo son built it up in 2 days during his playtime. However, the two passenger cars are almost identical and little fun to build. If the design could include one dining car and one sleeping car, that would have been much better and fun.
